You know what's worse than having a serious cough? Having to drink that thick cough medicine to make it go away. That stuff tastes nasty, like rotten cherries mixed with maple syrup and a little menthol to round it out. I'd be lying if I said that's what I thought the new Powerade Advance Cherry Lime was going to taste like it. It doesn't even look like cough syrup in the large plastic bottle. The last Powerade Advance I tried was probably the best yet of the "water like", refresher energy beverages. It gave me hope that Cherry Lime might be a thirst quenching version of a Shirley Temple.
Cherry Lime Powerade Advance looks good with a bright red color that is completely translucent and non sparkling. However as I alluded to earlier, this stuff tastes like cherry cough syrup. It really has the same flavor but without the syrupy thickness. Imagine taking cough syrup and diluting it with a bunch of water and there you have Powerade Advance Cherry Lime. It does have a slightly sour flavor from the lime with a bit of bitterness like when you get a piece of the lime peel in your corona. I definitely winced while drinking this. Stick with the Berry flavor of Powerade Advance or if you are looking for a cherry drink, the SoBe Superman.
The ingredients aren't much to like. There's HFCS, maltodextrin, taurine, salt, caffeine, carnitine, sucralose, and B Vitamins. There was a noticeable energy boost over classic Powerade or Gatorade, but where this drink really shines is as a hangover cure. Normally after I night of pounding shots, I have two Gatorades waiting in the fridge. But with my few test runs, this does a great job of fending off a hangover. The B Vitamins, salt and water help get your body back to equilibrium while the caffeine and taurine give you some much needed energy. It really is a life-saver for those mornings where your head won't stop pounding and any light hurts.
